Performance analysis of high-resolution ice-sheet simulations

چکیده

Abstract Numerical glacier and ice-sheet models compute evolving ice geometry velocity fields using various stress-balance approximations boundary conditions. At high spatial resolution, with horizontal mesh/grid resolutions of a few kilometers or smaller, these usually require time steps shorter than climate-coupling scales because they update thickness after each solution. High-resolution performance is degraded by the stability restrictions such explicit time-stepping. This short note, which considers shallow approximation Stokes as end members, clarifies scaling numerical model quantifying simulation cost per year in terms mesh resolution number degrees freedom. The current-generation time-stepping assessed, then compared to prospective implicit schemes. main results highlight key roles played algorithmic solvers coupled, implicit-step solvers.

Interactive desktop analysis of high resolution simulations: application to turbulent plume dynamics and current sheet formation

The ever increasing processing capabilities of the supercomputers available to computational scientists today, combined with the need for higher and higher resolution computational grids, has resulted in deluges of simulation data. Yet the computational resources and tools required to make sense of these vast numerical outputs through subsequent analysis are often far from adequate, making such...

High-resolution study of layering within the percolation and soaked facies of the Greenland ice sheet

Within the percolation and soaked facies of the Greenland ice sheet, the relationship between radar-derived internal reflection horizons and the layered structure of the firn column is unclear. We conducted two small-scale ground-penetrating radar (GPR) surveys in conjunction with 10m firn cores that we collected within the percolation and soaked facies of the Greenland ice sheet. The two surve...

High-Resolution Monitoring of Internal Layers Over the Greenland Ice Sheet

The global sea level rise has been attributed to the melting of mountain glaciers among other causes. The mass balance of the glacial ice plays an important role in the rise of the Earth’s sea level. A key variable in assessing the mass balance of an ice sheet is accumulation rate, which is currently determined from ice cores and pits. Accumulation data are sparse, and there are large uncertain...

Performance Evaluation of Ultra-High-Resolution Climate Simulations

Currently production climate simulations typically occur at rather coarse resolution, withO(100 km) separation between grid points. This choice of resolution is a direct result of limited computing resources. While 100 km resolution is sufficient to resolve global and large continental scale features and trends in the climate system, it is insufficient to resolve regional features. Encouraged b...
